“I may be more expensive but it will be perfect in the end” were the words Antoine Loodgieter told us when we decided to work with him. Unfortunately, the result was far from perfect, and his behavior throughout the project was unacceptable and unprofessional.
The major renovation work (demolishing the old bathroom and building a new wall) went smoothly. However, once the tiling and finishing work began, so did the problems. Several tiles were uneven, damaged tiles were installed anyway, and one tile was even placed over an electrical socket despite us mentioning it several times beforehand.
We had purchased 10% extra tiles, yet Antoine repeatedly complained that we had not bought enough. Even after buying more, tiles were still incorrectly installed and had to be removed and replaced, creating unnecessary waste and extra cost.
They also damaged other parts of our house without informing us, including a driveway light and drilling through the wall into the neighboring room. We only discovered these issues ourselves.
His son also removed ground cables previously installed by our electrician without telling us or replacing them. When the electrician returned, he had to reinstall everything.
The finishing work was poor overall, and we repeatedly had to ask for defects to be corrected. Antoine constantly claimed everything would “look perfect once the silicone was applied,” as if silicone could hide poor workmanship. Rather than acknowledging mistakes, he consistently blamed others.
The shower tap was installed without one of the screws securing it, causing it to fall and chip the shower base. When we asked about it, Antoine claimed the screw had not been included but admitted he installed it anyway without informing us. His response was: “Yeah, if I have to start telling you everything…”. A professional should never install something they know is unsafe.
Communication and scheduling became increasingly frustrating. During the first weeks, we took time off work, worked from home, gave him house keys, and arranged a dogsitter to accommodate him. Once the original deadline passed and he started other jobs, appointments became irregular. He would often tell us at the last minute that he planned to come the next day, then get frustrated when we could not reorganize our schedules. There were also repeated cancellations and no-shows.
The situation escalated on the day he was supposed to finish the project. We pointed out a few remaining defects and scratches on the toilet. He reluctantly agreed to replace the toilet (which he never ordered) but immediately announced he would return another day to finish everything else. After I explained that we had once again rearranged our schedules for his visit, he insulted us and stormed out.
Despite our frustration, we always remained calm and respectful. Unfortunately, he did not extend us the same courtesy.
Although he initially said he would continue the project, over the next four weeks they only came for a few hours here and there despite promising full working days. During his last visit, he quietly left after two hours without saying anything. When we later sent photos of defects that still had not been fixed, he terminated the contract and immediately blocked my partner’s number. He also refused to clean the crawl space, leaving behind a significant amount of debris.
In his termination letter, Antoine claimed he could no longer finish the work because we kept pointing out “alleged” defects. The defects shown in the photos attached to this review are not alleged. They are only some of the issues that remained, not a complete list. After we finally started using the bathroom regularly, we also discovered that one of the sink pipes leaks, showing that even the plumbing was not completed properly.
Antoine Loodgieter should leave bathroom renovations to actual professionals and work on his behavior.
